Discover a New Testament character’s perfect nickname
Do you have a nickname? Is that title a good description of who you really are? Join our hosts on “Discover the Word” for a look at someone who has a nickname so perfect that most of us have forgotten his real name!
My Friends And I
John Chrysostom (347–407), archbishop of Constantinople, said this about friendship: “Such is friendship, that through it we love places and seasons; for as . . . flowers drop their sweet leaves on the ground around them, so friends impart favor even to the places where they dwell.”
Discover the friendship Christ offers us
Sheep need a shepherd. Without him, the flock is defenseless, helpless, and hopeless! Just like sheep need a shepherd, so we need Jesus.
Discover what friendship with Christ looks like
God’s Word describes Jesus as our King, our Judge, and our Lord. But Jesus also wants us to know Him as our friend. We’ll catch a glimpse in our study of Matthew chapter 9.
A Genuine Friend
In the novel Shane, a friendship forms between Joe Starrett, a farmer on the American frontier, and Shane, a mysterious man who stops to rest at the Starrett home. The men first bond as they work together to remove a giant tree stump from Joe’s land. The relationship deepens as Joe rescues Shane from a fight and Shane helps Joe improve and guard his farmland. The men share a sense of mutual respect and loyalty that reflects what Scripture says: “Two are better than one . . . . If they fall, one will lift up his companion” (Eccl. 4:9-10).
Discover the power of friendship
God calls all of us to share the gospel. Thankfully, we don’t have to go to seminary, stand on the street corner, or fill stadiums in order to answer that call! Let’s discuss a simple way of reaching others for Christ.

More Than Enough
When I entertained a large group in my home, I feared that the menu I planned wouldn’t be enough to serve all the guests. I shouldn’t have worried though. Several friends unexpectedly brought additional items and all of us were able to enjoy the surprise surplus. We had more than enough and were able to share out of the abundance.
How being a “splinter-remover” has its risks, but also rich rewards
Have you ever tried to help a friend deal with a sinful action, only to encounter resentment, hurt, and frustration? If so, you might question whether it’s worth trying to help at all.
A Friend In Need
Not long ago my wife, Janet, and I bought a quantity of beef from a friend who raised cattle on a small farm. It was less expensive than meat from a grocery store, and we put it in the freezer to use throughout the coming months.
The Good And The Bad
Recently, I began studying the kings of the Old Testament with some friends. I noticed on the chart that we were using that a few of the leaders of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah are labeled good, but most of them are labeled bad, mostly bad, extra bad, and the worst.
True Hospitality
In 1987, our family moved to California to take up the pastorate of a church in the Long Beach area. The day we flew into town, my secretary picked us up at the airport to take us to our house. As we pulled into traffic, the very first thing I saw was a bumper sticker that read: “Welcome To California . . . Now Go Home!” It was not exactly a warm and cheery welcome to sunny southern California!

Friendship
Friendship is one of life’s greatest gifts. True friends seek a special kind of good for their friends: the highest good, which is that they might know God and love Him with all of their heart, soul, and mind. German pastor and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “The aim of friendship is exclusively determined by what God’s will is for the other person.”
