    Poem: Things I Cannot Change

The past that might have been
The words that were left unsaid
The bond that might have been mended

    Not My Worry

A man worried constantly about everything. Then one day his friends heard him whistling happily and looking noticeably relaxed. “What happened?” they asked him in astonishment.

He said, “I’m paying a man to do my worrying for me.”

“How much do you pay him?” they asked.

“Two thousand dollars a week,” he replied.

“Wow! How can you afford that?”

“I can’t,” he said, “but that’s his worry.”

While this humorous way to handle stress doesn’t work in real life, as God’s children we can turn our worries over to Someone who has everything perfectly under control even—especially—when we feel it is not.

    The prophet Isaiah reminds us…

How to Trust God in the Season of Job-hunting

I spent six months of my life as a couch potato. By the time I started my new job, I knew which online channels you could surf for the latest television series.

    Unclear Vision

My friend Meaghan is an accomplished equestrian, and I’ve been learning some interesting things about horses from her. For instance, despite having the largest eyes of all land mammals, horses have poor eyesight and can see fewer colors than humans. Because of this, they can’t always identify objects on the ground. When they see a pole, they don’t know if it’s a pole they can easily step over or a large snake that might harm them. For this reason, until they are properly trained horses are easily frightened and quick to run away.

We too may want to run from alarming…

    Look Up!

I was stuck in a cab in heavy traffic one day when I spotted a billboard sign which said, “Look up, young man.—God”. That day, I was heading to Makati, a city which is 15 miles away from my hometown, to attend an appointment.

    Tissue Boxes

As I sat in the surgical waiting room, I had time to think. I had been here recently, when we received the jarring news that my only brother, much too young, was “brain dead.”

And so on this day, waiting for news about my wife who was undergoing a serious surgical procedure, I penned a lengthy note to her. Then, surrounded by nervous chatter and oblivious children, I listened for the quiet voice of God.

Suddenly, news! The surgeon wanted to see me. I went to a secluded room to wait. There, on the table, sat two tissue boxes, conspicuously available. They…

Joy: the first step in wisdom

We’re in a great series this week and we’re discovering that there is great wisdom in living joyfully.

    Follow Your Heart . . . Really?

Follow your heart, and do what makes you happy. People offered me this advice countless times while I was growing up. They said it was the secret recipe to living a pleasurable, joyful life.

    Doesn’t God Care?

Why does the intoxicated driver escape an accident unharmed while his sober victim is seriously injured? Why do bad people prosper while good people suffer? How often have you been so confused by things going on in your life that you have cried out, “Doesn’t God care?”

Habakkuk struggled with this same question as he saw the distressing situation in Judah where wickedness and injustice were running rampant (Hab. 1:1-4). His confusion drove him to ask God when He would act to fix the situation. God’s reply was nothing short of perplexing.

God said that He would use the Chaldeans as the…

    Truth-telling and the workplace

We see it all the time, advertisements for products with misleading information and guarantees built on false promises. Don’t miss this thought-provoking conversation as we conclude our series on “Faith at Work”!

What should our attitude be about work?

When we meet someone for the first time, we usually ask “What do you do?” So much of our identity is linked to our work, but how do we keep our jobs from defining us completely? Listen in as we explore our relationship to our labors.

Growing our relationship with God while we work

Today we continue looking at how we can honor God while on the job.
