A loving perspective on God’s expectations for you

She did what she could. Five simple words from the mouth of Jesus that contain a wealth of encouragement and insight for us today! Let's reveal the freedom contained in this brief verse in Mark 14.

Why simply loving the Lord with who we are and what we have, is all God asks

Ever feel like even the best you could do is never enough? That you’ll never meet the expectations placed on you? More from our study in Mark, chapter 14.

    The Power Of Music

In Wales, the music of men’s chorus groups is deeply engrained in the culture. Prior to World War II, one Welsh glee club had a friendly yet competitive rivalry with a German glee club, but that bond was replaced with animosity during and after the war. The tension was gradually overcome, though, by the message on the trophy shared by the two choruses: “Speak with me, and you’re my friend. Sing with me, and you’re my brother.”

Let’s look at the story of Mary of Bethany to see how simply embracing God’s love can change the world

Faced with the overwhelming evils and ills of a broken world, it’s difficult to see how we could possibly make a difference. We want to help, but just don’t know how. Join with us in this brand-new study.

    Before And After

What changes take place in a life of faith after severe testing? I thought of this as I read the tragic story of a Jamaican dad who accidentally shot and killed his 18-year-old daughter while trying to protect his family from intruders.

How God’s silence may be part of a bigger and better purpose

Ever feel like your prayers never make it past the ceiling? Maybe you’re wondering if God is even paying attention when you try to talk with Him. More from our study in Matthew chapter 15.

    An Important Command

When asked by a lawyer to identify the most important rule in life, Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). In those words, Jesus summed up what God most desires from us.

    Resolve To Resolve

I haven’t made any New Year’s resolutions since 1975. I haven’t needed any new ones—I’m still working on old ones like these: write at least a short note in my journal every day; make a strong effort to read my Bible and pray each day; organize my time; try to keep my room clean (this was before I had a whole house to keep clean).

Understanding the truth about worship through a study on Matthew chapter 15

Jesus is on the lookout for true worshipers. But it’s not necessarily those who sing the loudest, or know the most hymns. Why genuine worship is less about what we do, and more about acknowledging what God has done!

    Heard By God

After reading several children’s books with my daughter, I told her that I was going to read a grown-up book for a while and then we would look at books together again. I opened the cover and began to read in silence. A few minutes later, she looked at me doubtfully and said, “Mommy, you aren’t really reading.” She assumed that since I wasn’t speaking, I wasn’t processing the words.

    Great Expectations

I once asked a counselor what the major issues were that brought people to him. Without hesitation he said, “The root of many problems is broken expectations; if not dealt with, they mature into anger and bitterness.”

In our best moments, it’s easy to expect that we will find ourselves in a good place surrounded by good people who like and affirm us.

    Better Than Planned

Interruptions are nothing new. Rarely does a day go by as planned.

Life is filled with inconveniences. Our plans are constantly thwarted by forces beyond our control. The list is long and ever-changing: Sickness. Conflict. Traffic jams. Forgetfulness. Appliance malfunctions. Rudeness. Laziness. Impatience. Incompetence.

    An Ordinary Day

While exploring a museum exhibit titled “A Day in Pompeii,” I was struck by the repeated theme that August 24, ad 79 began as an ordinary day. People were going about their daily business in homes, markets, and at the port of this prosperous Roman town of 20,000 people. At 8 a.m., a series of small emissions were seen coming from nearby Mount Vesuvius, followed by a violent eruption in the afternoon. In less than 24 hours, Pompeii and many of its people lay buried under a thick layer of volcanic ash. Unexpected.

How God orchestrates relationships that can last a lifetime

It’s remarkable how God orchestrates relationships that can last a lifetime. Let's introduce longtime friend, and former MOPS President, Elisa Morgan to the “Discover the Word” family. A time of remembrance and new acquaintances.
