Why Pneumonia Was What I Needed

I used to be a very ambitious person. In college, I enjoyed life and worked hard to get what I wanted—especially when it came to grades. I wanted to be the top student so that others would look up to me. This came at the expense of everything else: God, family, and friends.

    Defending Our Faith

This course will guide you in ways to defend your faith while expressing God’s love toward those who oppose you. The emphasis is not on “winning the argument” but on planting seeds of the gospel in your conversations. First Peter 3:15 says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

Serving from a place of brokenness

Do you feel like your flaws and your family’s imperfections have disqualified you from being able to serve God? Well, today on Discover the Word, the group shares how it’s our very brokenness that often makes us candidates for service! Hear the conclusion of the series “The Beauty of Broken,” today on Discover the Word!

    Serving Christ

“I’m a secretary,” a friend told me. “When I tell people this, they sometimes look at me with a certain pity. But when they find out who I am secretary for, they open their eyes with admiration!” In other words, society often defines some jobs as less important than others, unless those jobs happen to relate in some way to rich or famous people.

For the child of God, however, any occupation, regardless of the earthly boss, can be held proudly because we serve the Lord Jesus.

In Ephesians 6, Paul talks to servants and masters. He reminds both groups that…

The need to be rooted as we walk out our faith

“Let’s burn that bridge when we come to it.” That’s what’s known as a mixed metaphor. It doesn’t make sense! Today on Discover the Word, we will talk about a mixed metaphor in the Bible. Like the need to be rooted, as we walk out our faith while standing on a firm foundation. Join the group […]

    Keep walking

The Bible is filled with analogies that use “walking” as a word picture. Whether it’s walking in wisdom, walking in the spirit, or walking in the light, it seems like that kind of movement is key. Because faith is never static! Today on Discover the Word, we reveal how a spiritually healthy Christian keeps walking! That’s […]

Relationship is central to being rooted in Christ

Most of us have heard the statement that “Christianity is not a religion, it’s a relationship.”  Well, today on Discover the Word, we will continue the series of conversations this week by talking about why we place such a high value in life on our relationships, and why relationship is at the center of this discussion of […]

    “Rooted in Christ”

Who doesn’t like trees? They offer both beauty and shade and are a critical part of the environment. And it’s striking how often the Bible uses trees as a metaphor in communicating spiritual truth. This week on Discover the Word, we will begin a study called “Rooted in Christ.” With trees, healthy roots are essential […]

    “Our sufficiency is from God”

On July 4, the U.S. will celebrate Independence Day. But today on “Discover the Word,” the group will talk about how, as individual believers in Christ, we can celebrate Dependence Day. And that’s every day when we sincerely say, “Our sufficiency is from God.” Today on “Discover the Word,” we will discuss the essence of prayer, complete dependence on God. Tune in today to “Discover the Word”!

    Unquestion Revelation

In that day you will ask Me nothing —John 16:23

When is “that day”? It is when the ascended Lord makes you one with the Father. “In that day” you will be one with the …

    No Greater Joy

Bob and Evon Potter were a fun-loving couple with three young sons when their life took a wonderful new direction. In 1956 they attended a Billy Graham Crusade in Oklahoma City and gave their lives to Christ. Before long, they wanted to reach out to others to share their faith and the truth about Christ, so they opened their home every Saturday night to high school and college students who had a desire to study the Bible. A friend invited me and I became a regular at the Potters’ house.

This was a serious Bible study that included lesson preparation…

    Doing Right in God’s Sight

“Cowboy builders” is a term many British homeowners use for tradespeople who do shoddy construction work. The term is bandied about with fear or regret, often because of bad experiences.

No doubt there were rogue carpenters, masons, and stonecutters in biblical times, but tucked away in the story of King Joash repairing the temple is a line about the complete honesty of those who oversaw and did the work (2 Kings 12:15).

However, King Joash “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” (v. 2) only when Jehoiada the priest instructed him. As we see in 2 Chronicles 24:17-27, after…

    God’s Way

We really needed to hear from God. Having been asked to foster two young children as an emergency measure just for 3 months, a decision had to be made about their future. With three older children of our own, becoming foster parents to preschoolers didn’t seem to fit with our life plan and having our family almost double in size had been hard work. Our book of daily readings by the veteran missionary Amy Carmichael directed us to some unfamiliar verses in Numbers 7.

“I wonder how the Kohathites felt?” Amy wrote. “All the other priests had ox-carts to carry their…

    This Is the Day

In 1940, Dr. Virginia Connally, age 27, braved opposition and criticism to become the first female physician in Abilene, Texas. A few months before her 100th birthday in 2012, the Texas Medical Association presented her with its Distinguished Service Award, Texas’ highest physician honor. Between those two landmark events, Dr. Connally has enthusiastically embraced a passion for spreading the gospel around the world through her many medical mission trips while living a life of service to God and to others—one day at a time.

Dr. Connally’s pastor, Phil Christopher, said, “Every day for her is a gift.” He recalled a letter…
