Discouragement: The Devil’s Most Effective Weapon
I once heard a story of an old devil who was planning to retire. He put up for auction all the weapons which he had accumulated over the years. They ranged from envy to laziness to gossip.
Solution to Forgetfulness: A Pile of Stones
Because I’m forgetful, I made a pile of stones and put them in my living room. I was inspired by a kind woman named Terri Carter whom I’ve met only once in my life.
Thank God I’ve Got Fingers and Toes
I will never forget pulling away from a leprosy colony in Southern India the summer of 2003. I was 13 then and had just helped my family conduct a worship service for a couple dozen Christians in the colony.
How not to struggle with comparison
We live in a culture of comparison. And compared to some, we feel we’re doing great. Compared to others, we don’t measure up. But today on Discover the Word, we will examine how our often inaccurate view of ourselves can also distort our view of God. Struggling with comparison? Well, be part of the group […]

Is It Possible to Rejoice Always?
In the midst of never-ending to-do lists, changes in my workplace, and pressure coming from all directions, joy has, at times, seemed more like a distant figure rather than a constant companion. I have been frustrated, anxious, doubtful, stressed—sometimes, all at once.
What I’ve Gained From Memory Loss

Landing in the Pig Pen Instead of My Dream Job
As I walked into the farm yard in my pink-striped wellies and oversized farm gear, I was hopeful that this job would only be for a couple of weeks.
Grateful for Everything

On one trip, we pulled in and walked over to order our coffee. An attendant handed the two cups over, and then asked me for two dollars. I asked why. She pointed to the small print on the sign—at this stop, only the driver got free coffee; you had to pay for passengers.…

Listening to the call to worship
When you hear someone shout, you’ve got to listen carefully to discover what they’re shouting about and what emotion is attached to their outburst. Today on Discover the Word, we find that there are several different kinds of shouts in the Bible, too! It’s another enlightening discussion from Psalm 100. Hear more from the series […]
4 Things God Should Have Given Me
You bless us when we pray to You, don’t You? In Sunday school, we’re taught to clasp our hands tightly, shut our eyes, bow our heads and pray earnestly for whatever we want.
Enjoying God’s good gifts
We can take pleasure in the homes we live in, the food we eat, or the stuff we have. But if we do, does that mean we’re overly materialistic? Join us today on Discover the Word when our special guest Jeff Manion helps the team explore the difference between loving and enjoying God’s good gifts. […]
There is No Shame in Getting Help
Due to injuries resulting from a major car accident which left me bed-bound, I have ample personal experience knowing that asking for help is not an easy thing to do.
