    The Main Event

While watching a fireworks display during a celebration in my city, I became distracted. Off to the right and the left of the main event, smaller fireworks occasionally popped up in the sky. They were good, but watching them caused me to miss parts of the more spectacular display directly above me.

Sometimes good things take us away from something better. That happened in the life of Martha, whose story is recorded in Luke 10:38-42. When Jesus and His disciples arrived in the village of Bethany, Martha welcomed them into her home. Being a good host meant that someone had to…

Sex: What are you waiting for?

I grew up in a dysfunctional non-Christian family, but my mother raised me to be responsible, conservative, and cautious, to the best of her ability. Though I was not explicitly taught to wait for marriage before having sex, I knew that this was the right thing to do. So I waited.

God’s long-range perspective for growing us

Today on “Discover the Word,” our special guest Margaret Feinberg helps us conclude our discussion about the surprising depth of some of the agrarian images used in the Bible. Today’s conversation comes out of a fruitful visit Margaret had with a vintner that showed her how the long-range perspective a vintner has for growing grapes is the same kind of long-range perspective God has for growing us.

    Poem: Dry Spell

No forest fires, no burning bushes
No thorny soil or sharp weapons
No storms to overcome, no Goliaths
But in life, there are different kinds of struggles

    Working together in proper order

What’s the buzz on all those bees in the Bible? Well, today on “Discover the Word,” with the help of special guest Margaret Feinberg, we’ll comb through just a few of the nearly seventy scriptural references to bees and honey. As a beekeeper revealed, “ ‘a land flowing with milk and honey’ is one where the intricate social systems of all the hives are working in proper order.” Be(e) part of a fascinating conversation today on “Discover the Word”!

    When God Didn’t Heal Me

For the past few days, I had been down with a bout of flu. Fortunately, I was cured after taking some medication. I thank God for healing me; I believe that divine healing can take place through medicine.

Responding to only the Master’s voice

Today we’re going to get a bit sheepish on “Discover the Word.” And you’re invited to join the flock as our special guest Margaret Feinberg introduces us to some of the agricultural . . . or “agrarian” themes of the Bible. When Margaret interviewed a real-life shepherdess she discovered that sheep are hard wired to respond only to their master’s voice. Learn why the image of God as the Shepherd, and us as sheep is so powerful when you listen today on “Discover the Word”!

    What is worship?

Today on “Discover the Word,” we will discuss how worship isn’t just songs we sing on a Sunday morning. It’s a lifestyle that flows out of intimate relationship with God. We proclaim God’s worthiness through everyday interactions, for example, the way we treat others. Included in our daily worship is taking time to seek His face, meditating on the great love He poured out over us through the cross.

Are You Running on an Empty Tank?

When I was getting ready to leave the house one day, my father said to me, “Better pump gas in the car, or else you might run out on the highway, you know . . .” I laughed at his comment and replied, “Nah, I got this covered. I’m sure there’s enough gas to take me to my destination and back.”

When I Think of My Successful Friends

Since young, I’ve had the privilege of having friends with brilliant minds who went on to achieve enviable success in school and at work. Many of them graduated from prestigious schools and are now holding well-paying positions as computer engineers, doctors, lawyers, judges, and financial experts.

Can We be Rich and Godly at the Same Time?

My youth group had just begun a study on the Beatitudes. As we were trying to make sense of the first beatitude in Luke 6:20, one youth asked, “Does it mean that Christians can’t be rich?” The question was to be expected, since Jesus’ statement seemed to suggest this line of thinking.

Why Do We Crave and Struggle to Achieve Success?

Recently, I came across this lament by a very talented young person on his blog: “The reason why I hate attending lessons and going to school is that you are inherently born with lower IQ, so no matter how much you work, people with higher IQ will still win you.”

    Do We Enjoy God?

For the past few days, I have been ploughing through the book of Isaiah trying my best to understand what the prophet means. But I have been growing increasingly anxious, because I don’t seem to be learning much; nothing applicable has really struck me.

    My Encounter with A Bigwig

The Oxford dictionary defines “privilege” as “a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.” That we can bring everything to God in prayer is a privilege indeed, one that should not be taken for granted.

When I Thought God Didn’t Care

It was one of the most distressing periods of my life. I was midway through my medical internship in the hospital’s surgery department, in a town I had never set foot in before.
