    A Blind Man’s Plea

Some years ago a traveling companion noticed I was straining to see objects at a distance. What he did next was simple but life changing. He took off his glasses and said, “Try these.” When I put his glasses on, surprisingly my blurred vision cleared up. Eventually I went to an optometrist who prescribed glasses to correct my vision problem.

Today’s reading in Luke 18 features a man with no vision at all; and living in total darkness had forced him to beg for a living. Word about Jesus, the popular teacher and miracle worker, had reached the blind beggar’s ears;…

    Before the Beginning

“But if God has no beginning and no end, and has always existed, what was He doing before He created us? How did He spend His time?” Some precocious Sunday school student always asks this question when we talk about God’s eternal nature. I used to respond that this was a bit of a mystery. But recently I learned that the Bible gives us an answer to this question.

When Jesus prays to His Father in John 17, He says “Father, . . . you loved me before the creation of the world” (v. 24). This is God as revealed to…

    When Jesus Showed Up

Funeral, memorial service, celebration of life,  most everyone has been to a service saying goodbye to a loved one. And Jesus was no exception. But today, the Discover the Word team discusses the strangest funeral service of all time, when Jesus showed up and extended an invitation of his own, saying to His friend Lazarus, “Come out […]

Have you ever thought about the fact that just a few hundred years ago almost no one could enjoy “morning devotions”? Widespread personal access to the Bible is a relatively recent privilege! And today on Discover the Word, we’ll see how reading Scripture was originally a community event. Pull up a chair today as together we Discover […]

    Take Another Look at Jesus!

If there ever was a faithful person, it was Brother Justice. He was committed to his marriage, dedicated to his job as a postal worker, and stationed each Sunday at his post as a leader in our local church. I visited my childhood church recently, and perched on the upright piano was the same bell that Brother Justice rang to notify us that the time for Bible study was about to end. The bell has endured the test of time. And although Brother Justice has been with the Lord for years, his legacy of faithfulness also endures.

    The King’s Crown

We sat around the table, each person adding a toothpick to the foam disc before us. At our evening meal in the weeks leading up to Easter we created a crown of thorns—with each toothpick signifying something we had done that day for which we were sorry and for which Christ had paid the penalty. The exercise brought home to us, night after night, how through our wrongdoing we were guilty and how we needed a Savior. And how Jesus freed us through His death on the cross.

The crown of thorns that Jesus was made to wear was part of…

    The Via Dolorosa

During Holy Week, we remember the final days before Jesus’s crucifixion. The road Jesus traveled to the cross through the streets of Jerusalem is known today as the Via Dolorosa, the way of sorrows.

But the writer of Hebrews viewed the path Jesus took as more than just a path of sorrows. The way of suffering that Jesus willingly walked to Golgotha made a “new and living way” into the presence of God for us (Hebrews 10:20).

For centuries the Jewish people had sought to come into God’s presence through animal sacrifices and by seeking to keep the law. But the law…

    Everyone Likes A Winner

Everyone likes a winner. And when the Jews imagined the Messiah, they imagined a conquering king, not a crucified criminal. But today on Discover the Word, we’ll discuss how Jesus’s “kingdom” is different than we might imagine. It’s a kingdom the thief being crucified on the cross next to Jesus wanted in on! Join the […]

    Amazing Faith

When you think of stories about amazing faith, what comes to mind? Today on Discover the Word, the team shares what they believe is one of the most amazing stories of faith recorded in the Gospels. Be inspired when you join the Easter week conversations on Discover the Word today!

    Isn’t There Some Misunderstanding?

“Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to Him, “…are You going there again?” —John 11:7-8

Just because I don’t understand what Jesus Christ says, I have no right to determine that He must be mistaken in what He says. That is a dangerous view, and it is never right to think that my obedience to God’s directive will bring dishonor to Jesus. The only thing…

    Look and Be Quiet

In the song “Look at Him,” Mexican composer Rubén Sotelo describes Jesus at the cross. He invites us to look at Jesus and be quiet, because there is really nothing to say before the type of love Jesus demonstrated at the cross. By faith we can imagine the scene described in the Gospels. We can imagine the cross and the blood, the nails, and the pain.

When Jesus breathed His last, those who “had gathered to witness this sight . . . beat their breasts and went away” (Luke 23:48). Others “stood at a distance, watching these things” (v. 49). They looked…

    “The Rebel Next To Jesus”

When the gospel is preached there are two possible reactions. Rejection or faith. So why do people respond so differently to the same message? Today on Discover the Word, the team will address this tricky topic with a discussion about what brings rebels to repentance. It’s their Easter week conversations about “The Rebel Next to […]

“The Same Sun That Melts Ice, Hardens Clay”

“The same sun that melts ice, hardens clay.” Ever heard that before? It’s true, isn’t it? And when exposed to God, some hearts become tender, but others grow calloused. Today on Discover the Word, we begin the Easter week conversations about the two men crucified alongside Jesus and their two very different responses. Listen today […]

    Who Is This?

Imagine standing shoulder to shoulder with onlookers by a dirt road. The woman behind you is on her tiptoes, trying to see who is coming. In the distance, you glimpse a man riding a donkey. As He approaches, people toss their coats onto the road. Suddenly, you hear a tree crack behind you. A man is cutting down palm branches, and people are spreading them out ahead of the donkey.

Jesus’s followers zealously honored Him as He entered Jerusalem a few days before His crucifixion. The multitude rejoiced and praised God for “all the miracles they had seen” (Luke 19:37). Jesus’…
