Movie Review: Hercules
Written by Calvin Woo The recent blockbuster movie Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson follows a different storyline from Disney’s version. The Hercules we are introduced to at the start is a mercenary. His reputation as half-god and half-mortal is only legend up to this point. With his astonishing strength and legendary reputation, he fought in battles, […]
“I jumped on the opportunity…”
It all began five years ago when I chanced upon the pictures in my friend’s photo album, taken with his then newly acquired DSLR camera. “You have a really good camera!” I exclaimed. My interest in photography was piqued. Shortly after, this same friend of mine lost […]
Small Ways In Small Places
Often I meet with people who serve in what they think are seemingly small ways in small places. They are frequently discouraged by loneliness, feeling that their acts of service are insignificant. When I hear them speak, I think of one of the angels in C. S. Lewis’ book Out of the Silent Planet. He said: “My people have a law never to speak of sizes or numbers to you. . . . It makes you do reverence to nothings and pass by what is really great.”

Upon closer inspection, many interesting parallels can be drawn from it to provide […]
Transformation
By Teresa Ann Yu I enjoy watching the weight loss reality show The Biggest Loser. Each season, contestants are pushed to the limit by demanding personal trainers in order to shed unwanted mass. Their uphill struggle contains insights that can be useful in our own transformation journey as Christians. Here are a few spiritual lessons I […]
Reframing The Picture
For 3 months I had a ringside seat— or should I say a bird’s-eye view—of God’s amazing handiwork. Ninety feet above the floor of Norfolk Botanical Garden, workers installed a webcam focused on the nest of a family of bald eagles, and online viewers were allowed to watch.
Room And Board
On a recent trip to England, my wife and I visited Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon. The house is more than 400 years old, and it was the childhood and family home of William Shakespeare’s wife.
Whistler's Painting
By Tin Hubilla Whistler’s Mother is a painting of a woman dressed in black with a painting in the room. The painter James McNeil Whistler said, “Don’t fit the picture in the room but fit the room for the picture.” But that’s not how we normally behave. Remember that moment when you go out shopping […]
Movie Review: X-Men: Days of Future Past
The film is set in a dark, dystopian future where weaponized robots called Sentinels have ravaged the world in the hopes of exterminating the mutant threat from the planet. Rushing onto the big screen is the first fast-paced, mutant-versus-Sentinel fight scene. You can barely start breathing again when you are transported abruptly, […]
Book Review: Compared to Her by Sophie de Witt
By Ruth Lawrence How to experience true contentment. That’s quite a claim for a book to make, and I have to say that I was sceptical. But I have since changed my mind. Halfway in I realised that I was guilty of comparing myself to others, particularly in the area of ‘Christian-ness’ (read the book […]
“Noah”, Have You Watched It?
By Ian Tan Weeks before the Hollywood blockbuster Noah was released, reviews and comments from the public on the questionable authenticity of the movie flooded the media. Facebook posts, tweets and online articles by both religious and non-religious reviewers created mixed reactions toward Hollywood’s approach in re-enacting the account from Genesis. As I listened and […]
Insight Not Emotion
I have to lead my life in faith, without seeing Him. — 2 Corinthians 5:7 (MOFFATT)
For a time we are conscious of God’s attentions, then, when God begins to use us in His enterprises, we take on a pathetic look …
The Spontaneity Of Love
Love suffereth long, and is kind . . . — 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is not premeditated, it is spontaneous, i.e., it bursts up in extraordinary ways. There is nothing of mathematical certainty in Paul’s category of love. …
The Graciousness Of Uncertainty
It doth not yet appear what we shall be. — 1 John 3:2
Naturally, we are inclined to be so mathematical and calculating that we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing. We imagine that we have to …
Learning To Love
When Hans Egede went to Greenland as a missionary in 1721, he didn’t know the Inuit language. His temperament was often overbearing, and he struggled to be kind to the people.
