The Day I Forgave My Abusive Father

I used to hate my father. In my eyes, he was a compulsive gambler, a hypocrite and someone not worthy of being a father.

Going First

We worked patiently to help our son heal and adjust to his new life with our family. Trauma from his early days in an orphanage was fueling some negative behaviors. While I had enormous compassion for the hardships he experienced in his early days, I felt myself begin to withdraw from him emotionally because of those behaviors. Ashamed, I shared my struggle with his therapist. Her gentle reply hit home: “He needs you to go first . . . to show him he’s worthy of love before he’ll be able to act like it.”

John pushes the recipients of his letter…

Making “fishers of men”

Some people just have the gift of gab. They can talk readily and easily about almost anything with almost anybody! But for many of us, sharing our faith seems daunting. Today on Discover the Word, we’ll share insights on how to get comfortable showing and telling others about our faith. Be inspired by listening today to Discover the Word!

There is No Shame in Getting Help

Due to injuries resulting from a major car accident which left me bed-bound, I have ample personal experience knowing that asking for help is not an easy thing to do.

Could I Say That?

The perception of favoritism is one of the biggest factors in sibling rivalry,” said Dr. Barbara Howard, a developmental behavioral pediatrician (“When Parents Have a Favorite Child” nytimes.com). An example would be the Old Testament character Joseph, who was his father’s favorite son, which, made his older brothers furious (Gen. 37:3–4). So they sold Joseph to merchants traveling to Egypt and made it appear that a wild animal had killed him (37:12–36). His dreams had been shattered and his future appeared hopeless.

Yet, along Joseph’s journey of life, he chose to be true to his God and rely on Him even…

5 Lessons from A Family Feud

Family disputes are common. In fact, I see them happening in my own family all too often, whether it is over minute or important matters.

The alien among us

When you think of “aliens,” you probably picture little green men from far off galaxies or scary creatures in outer space. But today on Discover the Word, the team considers how Jesus calls those who are far off spiritually—aliens—into his family. A different way of thinking about “aliens” when you listen to Discover the Word!

Celebrate Freedom

After being kidnapped, held hostage for 13 days, and released, New Zealand news cameraman Olaf Wiig, with a broad smile on his face, announced, “I feel more alive now than I have in my entire life.”

For reasons difficult to understand, being freed is more exhilarating than being free.

For those who enjoy freedom every day, Olaf’s joy was a good reminder of how easily we forget how blessed we are. This is also true spiritually. Those of us who have been Christians for a long time often forget what it’s like to be held hostage by sin. We can become complacent…

from USA

My husband and I relocated from a Chicago suburb to Southaven, MS in November of 2016.
4 days after Christmas I was on my way home from the gym in my beloved 2015 slate gray Hyundai Sonato when a car came barreling towards me over a hill in my lane.
I didn't have time to react. My car spun around and I was facing the direction I had just come from. Several strangers stopped to help and stayed with me until police and my husband arrived. These witnesses told police the driver of the other car was going about 75 and trying to pass several cars at once on this 2 lane road.
I walked away from this accident without a scratch. Some neck and shouder pain. My car was a total loss.
I saw a orthopedist about shoulder and he ordered an MRI. The doctor said he wasn't concerned about my shoulder but rather a goiter on my neck. He advised me to see my primary doctor asap. I was diagnosed with stage 1 thyroid cancer. Had it not been for the accident only God knows when it would have been discovered.
I have since had a thyroidectomy. A full body scan that revealed no disease left in body.
Tell me we don't serve an awesome God? His way is not ours. Everything happens for a reason in line with God's will.

“Fishing Tips”

When Jesus first called His disciples that were in the fishing business, He promised they’d become “fishers of men,” but what does that really mean? Today on Discover the Word, the group kicks off a brand-new series titled, “Fishing Tips.” It’s all about sharing your faith with others and trusting God to do the rest. […]

Confronting Marriage Struggles: Before and After

“And they live happily ever after.” That’s what I gathered from the movies how marriage would be like. Two people unite and start their married life together.

Destroying the Divides

A writing deadline loomed over me, while the argument I had with my husband earlier that morning swirled through my mind. I stared at the blinking cursor, fingertips resting on the keyboard. He was wrong too, Lord.

When the computer screen went black, my reflection scowled. My unacknowledged wrongs were doing more than hindering the work before me. They were straining my relationship with my husband and my God.

I grabbed my cell phone, swallowed my pride, and asked for forgiveness. Savoring the peace of reconciliation when my spouse apologized as well, I thanked God and finished my article on time.

The Israelites…
