Discover the correlation between Genesis 1 and John 1

Perspective matters, because sometimes it takes multiple viewpoints to make sense of the whole. Today on Discover the Word, we will show the correlation between Genesis chapter one, and John chapter one. At first, God sounds like a “far off” God, until He unexpectedly bursts forth on the scene in the body of a human. […]

Why I have Hope (Despite a terrible 2016)

I recently came across an article that reported that Planet Earth, a popular BBC nature and wildlife documentary, has racked up more millennial viewers—myself included—than reality TV shows like The X Factor.

Spreading Joy

When Janet went to teach English in a school overseas, she found the atmosphere gloomy and depressing. People did their jobs, but no one seemed happy. They didn’t help or encourage one another. But Janet, grateful for all that God had done for her, expressed it in everything she did. She smiled. She was friendly. She went out of her way to help people. She hummed songs and hymns.

Little by little, as Janet shared her joy, the atmosphere at the school changed. One by one people began to smile and help each other. When a visiting administrator asked the principal…

I started doing drugs at an early age and after a while I started hearing voices. Things got so bad I tried to kill myself. The doctors couldn't help me. No one could. I remember one night I was so lost and I prayed to God and I surrendered to Him and i said I was tired of making wrong decisions and asked Him to guide me. For a while things got worse. One day I talked to my pastor and told him my situation. He told me there's hope and prayed for me and when I'm ready I should come to church. So the next week I went to church. One day he asked if anyone needed prayer and I went up and the whole church prayed for me. Little by little things got better. Now I have a job and I'm clean and my family is proud of me. I owe all this to God. He rescued me from a hopeless situation. If there is anyone else with this simular problem God will help you out. All you have to do is ask Him. There's no way I could have done it without Him.

An unusual slant to the Christmas story

We all have our favorite Christmas memories, and often it’s a shared story, told from different angles. It’s the same with the various accounts of Jesus’ birth. Each gospel writer tells the same story—but from a different vantage point. Today on Discover the Word, we will discuss an unusual slant to the Christmas narrative. It’s found in the […]

5 Ways to Love A Stranger This Christmas

Once again, it’s Christmas—the season of merriment, goodwill, and cheer. For most, it’s a time for family and friends, and a time to reflect on the year gone by.

Enemy Love

When war broke out in 1950, fifteen-year-old Kim Chin-Kyung joined the South Korean army to defend his homeland. He soon found, however, that he wasn’t ready for the horrors of combat. As young friends died around him, he begged God for his life and promised that, if allowed to live, he would learn to love his enemies.

Sixty-five years later, Dr. Kim reflected on that answered prayer. Through decades of caring for orphans and assisting in the education of North Korean and Chinese young people, he has won many friends among those he once regarded as enemies. Today he shuns political…

Who Do You Say He Is?

In a 1929 Saturday Evening Post interview, Albert Einstein said, “As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene. . . . No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life.”

The New Testament Scriptures give us other examples of Jesus’s countrymen who sensed there was something special about Him. When Jesus asked His followers, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” they…

Our Covering

When talking about faith in Jesus, we sometimes use words without understanding or explaining them. One of those words is righteous. We say that God has righteousness and that He makes people righteous, but this can be a tough concept to grasp.

The way the word righteousness is pictured in the Chinese language is helpful. It is a combination of two characters. The top word is lamb. The bottom word is me. The lamb covers or is above the person.

When Jesus came to this world, John the Baptist called Him “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John…

Fully embracing Christmas

At first glance, the story of a young virgin becoming pregnant by the Spirit of God sounds, well, crazy. And it is until the gold standard of proof is given in Matthew chapter one. Today on Discover the Word, we will talk about an Old Testament passage in Isaiah that’s repeated in Matthew—providing evidence of […]

Why Didn’t I Give More?

Once, while my friends and I were having dinner, a skinny boy in a worn-out t-shirt and shorts approached us to sell tissue paper. Initially, we didn’t respond as we weren’t interested in buying any. But the boy, probably about 10, kept standing there, with a hopeful look on his face.
