Read Lamentations 3:19–24

‘Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.’ — Lamentations 3:22

Our young daughter developed the habit of singing whenever I cut her toenails. This takes her mind off what is happening. Research shows that belting out your favorite tune has physiological, neurological, and emotional benefits. According to the Bible, even a sad song can be beneficial. One example is a lament—a passionate expression of grief born out of regret or mourning. These can also bring hope and peace. The weeping prophet Jeremiah admitted that his nation’s disobedience led to the awful consequences faced by the people of Judah and Jerusalem (Lamentations 1:5). He frequently warned them of God’s wrath, urging repentance (Jeremiah 6:10–11; 18:11–12). But they refused to listen. Their city was destroyed and their families were taken into exile (1 Chronicles 9:1). The prophet cries because his heart is broken as he sees the desperate plight of his people.

Jeremiah experiences hope, however, as he remembers God’s faithful love that never ends and His mercies that never cease (Lamentations 3:22–24). Even a lament can remind you to put your hope in a faithful God.

A prayer for the nation

Dear Lord, we acknowledge the manifold sins that we as a nation have committed. We pray for your hand of healing over our land. We pray that you will remove the diseases that are afflicting our nation and that you will forgive our sins, in Jesus Name ~ Amen
