In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ~ John 1:4–5

This far into our journey through Lent, we’ve seen countless examples of how the world is broken and it can start wearing on us! It can be hard to be able to see the good that is coming in the future.

Sometimes when the world around us seems to hold only darkness and despair, it’s easy to give in to despair. But then the Spirit, who lives inside believers in Christ (John 14:17), reminds us that Jesus died for that brokenness and pain. When He came into the world as a human, He brought light into the darkness (1:4–5; 8:12). We see this in His conversation with Nicodemus, who furtively came to Jesus in the cover of darkness but left impacted by the Light (3:1–2; 19:38–40).

As Chris Renzema and Moriah Hazeltine put it in their song ‘There came a light’….

“So while we were sinners and lost; You walked among us
We were too weak to stand; You bore our cross
And now Your victory song’s raised; It’s echoing age to age
That through darkness; There came a light”

Take heart, there came a light. A Light no darkness can quench, a Light that was the light of all mankind.

Reflect

Where do you most feel the “darkness” of the world? Where is it most clear to you that things are not as they should be? Bring those to God in the comments or in a journal, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you see how the death and resurrection of Jesus brings light into that darkness.

A simple prayer like this can be all we need to get started connecting with God in our Lent journeys. To follow more of our journey through Lent and check out our other Lent devotions click here!
