“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ~ Matthew 6:16
Why do we fast?
Fasting is a way to recognise our neediness and vulnerability as humans. We need water. We need food. And in a culture that preaches independence, it’s good to realise we are quite dependent on God and others. Fasting reminds us we need God and his provision. Fasting also reminds us there are those in our cities and in our world who don’t have the access to food that we have.
BUT, who wants to not eat on purpose?
Well, when we get in this spot of knowing a fast would be a good idea, but not feeling it, here’s a prayer for fasting we can pray to get our hearts and minds in the right spot:
A Christian Fasting Prayer
Provider, who created the world with water and delicious food, use this fast to remind me to depend on you for my needs. Defender of the poor and needy, use this fast to create in me empathy for those in need, and intentional passion to provide for those around me. And as I go without, Father, help me see all the ways you provide good gifts for your children. Amen.
A simple prayer like this can be all we need to get started connecting with God in our Lent journeys. To follow more of our journey through Lent and check out our other Lent devotions click here!
