The teaching about the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is at the core of the Christian faith. Included in this teaching is the Spirit’s leading in our lives, for He guides us in our everyday living.

Romans 8 refers to the Spirit multiple times. Verse 14 says, “Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” This is in the section that speaks of the believer in Jesus’ battle against our sinful human nature, “the flesh” (see vv. 12–13). The Spirit’s leading is invisible, internal, and informed by Scripture (the “sword of the Spirit”; see Ephesians 6:17).

Believers in Jesus aren’t without God’s help as they seek to honor Him in their earthly living. The dynamics and privileges of family membership continue in Romans 8:15: “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves . . . ; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ ”

Far from being the privilege of an elite group, the Spirit’s leading is the heritage of every child of God. Practically speaking, what does His leading look like? It looks like a shepherd lovingly leading his sheep as expressed in Psalm 23:3: “He guides me along right paths for his name’s sake.” The Spirit of God leads us along “right paths.” As we spend time in prayer and the Scriptures, we learn how to live by His leading and walk in step with Him. Then our light shines, and He gets the glory.
