God, Goals, Gadgets: 7 Tech Essentials for the Christian Young Professional
In our fast-paced world, balancing career, family and spiritual life can be a challenge. As a Christian striving to live faithfully in all areas, I’ve discovered that using the right technological tools can significantly enhance productivity, support spiritual growth, and strengthen relationships.
Here’s a look at the tech tools I rely on daily to stay efficient and spiritually grounded, with the hope that these insights will benefit you too.
1. Immersing in God’s Word day and night: Our Daily Bread Ministries (ODBM) App
This Bible app helps me keep God’s Word at the centre of my daily routine. I discovered it recently and I’m impressed by its clean design, simplicity and well-curated reading plans. I especially enjoy listening to the evening meditations, with eyes closed and earphones on. It helps me to unwind after a busy day and to realign my heart with the Lord.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105
2. Mastering task management: Todoist
Todoist helps me manage my daily tasks, keeping my life organised and focused. I can sync my to-dos across devices, and it allows me to capture tasks as they come to mind so I don’t forget them, and to organise them later. This feature significantly reduces stress and enhances my productivity for all personal and professional things to do.
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3
3. Organising important events: Google Calendar
Google Calendar keeps track of official work, ministry and personal events, making sure I don’t forget anything important. Colour-coding events and setting custom reminders makes it very enjoyable to use. I can also go through past activities and reflect on events gone by, while planning ahead and sharing my schedule with others so that I remain accountable.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12
4. Unleashing visual creativity: Canva
Canva is a heaven-send for the everyday person who doesn’t have a design background. It’s where I create visuals for social media posts, edit videos, and design presentations for ministry updates or work presentations. Promo graphics can be designed straight from your mobile phone, and it’s intuitive and easy to use.
“…and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills – to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze…” — Exodus 35:31-32
5. Building professional connections: LinkedIn
LinkedIn has become my main social network, where I focus on building professional connections without the distractions found on other platforms. Many young professionals might not yet realise its full potential, but it’s a great place to network, market yourself and enhance your career progression.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17
6. Researching complex topics: Perplexity AI
Perplexity AI is my go-to for research, especially when it comes to complex topics. It generates results quickly using a broad range of sources, and saves me a lot of time scouring the net for information. AI tools are helpful as first-round research, however, keep in mind that they are not foolproof and some manual fact-checking still needs to be done.
“A discerning person keeps wisdom in view…” — Proverbs 17:24(a)
7. Carving out free-flowing ideas: Samsung Notes
I use the Samsung Notes app to capture ideas on the go. Using the handwriting function, I find that my thoughts and creativity flow more freely compared to typing. I use it to write notes, sketch diagrams and concepts, plan events or even journal my reflections. It’s like a digital version of the old-school pen and paper when used with a stylus.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” — 1 Peter 4:10
Every tool mentioned above serves as a great way to manage our demanding lives. As we use technologies to be more efficient and better connected, it’s more important that every task we put our hands to brings glory to God. In doing so, we fulfil our calling to be good stewards of all that God has entrusted to us.
