We all experience days where we feel down, anxious, exhausted or discouraged. Sometimes life doesn’t work out the way we plan, as we face many unexpected twists and turns and ups and downs. Even the happiest and most optimistic people face moments of doubt.
If this describes your life’s journey, you are not alone. There are many instances in the Bible where we read of God’s people who are discouraged, at times even depressed. Some want to give up on life, some run away from situations, some are so sad they don’t know what to do next, and one in particular wished he had never been born. Even Jesus was deeply troubled in the Garden of Gethsemane.
But the good news is that we also read how God meets His people when they are discouraged. God met with Hagar while she was fleeing her mistress Sarai, who had ‘dealt harshly’ with her. He met with Moses who was discouraged with the grumbling Israelites during their desert wanderings. He spoke to the prophet Samuel who was depressed about king Saul’s disobedience and demise. He met with Elijah who wanted to die after prolonged persecution and a death threat from Queen Jezebel. He also met with Job in all his misery and tribulations. This is all in the Old Testament.
But what about now? Does God still meet with his people when they are facing hard times? In Revelation we read how Jesus encourages His faithful followers in Smyrna and Philadelphia, who have every reason to be discouraged.
To his persecuted and impoverished people in Smyrna he says, I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! … Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. … Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown (Rev. 2:9-10).
To the church at Philadelphia he said, I know your deeds. … I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name (Rev.3:7-8).
Here we read of poverty, afflictions, suffering and little strength. I know… Jesus says. But keep your eyes fixed on me. There are eternal rewards for faithfulness.
What does this mean for us now? It shows us that God knows when you are feeling discouraged and facing hard times. He knows when you are afraid or feeling anxious. Your trying circumstances may not be a result of persecution. But He still has a word for you too.
In His Word God makes many promises to help His people meet every circumstance and situation in life. He has promises of comfort, support, provision, companionship, guidance, and more.
Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Like the psalmist, there are times in life when you will feel down and despondent. But don’t stop there. Trust in God and not yourself. He is your strength and portion.
So if you are feeling discouraged, God can meet with you through His Word, and by His grace, use life’s trials to mature believers and conform them into the image of His Son.

The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, “Oh God, forgive me”, or “Help me.” – Billy Graham.
