Is Peace Elusive? A reflection

[Christ] himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility. Ephesians 2:14

Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1

It saddens and troubles me whenever I read news about senseless killings. The recent terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, that killed 50 people is a real tragedy; it’s hard to imagine this could happen in a place that has been ranked as the world’s second-most peaceful country.

It was even more heartbreaking to read that among those who died was a three-year-old girl. Another four-year-old girl is in critical condition. They were among the innocent children who had accompanied their parents to a mosque for Friday prayers when they were gunned down.

In such times, it is natural for many to ask, Will there never be peace? Why is there so much conflict between countries and people? Why is there so much tension between the different races and cultures?

I believe that there can never be peace when there is no real desire for it. And there is no desire because many believe that the only way to resolve their differences is through violence. As a result, we see families broken and relationships fall apart. There is also a deep lack of trust between people, as we can see in battles and failed negotiations between countries.

Perhaps that’s the way the world is. But what does this mean for Christians?

I find comfort in the truth that peace can be found only when we have Christ in our lives. When He came to us, Christ brought peace (Ephesians 2:14), and through His death at the cross, He gave us peace with God the Father (Romans 5:1). World peace may be elusive for now, but we can have peace within our hearts because of Christ.

And we can also spread this message of peace. As believers, we can share the good news of this peace with God, which in turn leads to peace within ourselves and peace among us. We can tell others of the peace that Christ gives, and show them what it looks like through our words and actions. How I wish Christ’s peace could be experienced by many more!

Lord Jesus, teach us to share Your message of hope and peace with a world that is looking for peace but is unable to find it. Help me to show Your peace, love, and hope in my own small way, with those whom You have put in my path.

Only Jesus gives true peace.
