“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18)

There are many things we fear daily. These could be simple momentary fears or larger more complex ones that leave us sleepless and exhausted with life. Recently my colleague had a baby, for many days after I found that he was constantly tired and anxious. One day in particular he seemed more anxious and fearful than usual. When I queried about the welfare of the little one, he told me that he and his wife had been spending sleepless nights because their baby cried a lot. Many people might quieten this fear as trivial and say that most babies cry a lot in their first few months anyway, in fact they may even laugh it off, but his fear was valid for him. In the same way our fears however large or small are never irrelevant as they always matter to God. This is why the Bible proposes an antidote to fear in the verse before us – perfect love. And perfect love is found nowhere else than in the pages of Scripture. So, read on and find the strength to overcome your fears through this compilation of devotionals. May your fear be changed to faith today.

| Day 1: Irrational Fears

It makes no logical sense, but when my parents died within a three-month period, I feared they would forget me. Of course they were no longer on earth, but that left me with a large uncertainty. I was a young, unmarried adult and wondered how to navigate life without them. Feeling really single and alone, I sought God.

When I was young, my dad would “scare” us by hiding in the bush and growling like a lion. Even though we lived in rural Ghana in the 1960s, it was almost impossible that a lion lurked nearby. My brother and I would laugh and seek out the source of the noise, thrilled that playtime with Dad had arrived. One day a young friend came for a visit.

| Day 10: No Fear

Nearly every time an angel appears in the Bible, the first words he says are, “Do not be afraid” (Dan. 10:12, 19; Matt. 28:5; Rev. 1:17). Little wonder. When the supernatural makes contact with planet Earth, it usually leaves the human observers flat on their faces in catatonic fear. But Luke tells of God making an appearance on earth in a form…
