In the Greek, Luke infers, but Matthew makes it clear that Jesus used TWO DIFFERENT WORDS in the Lord’s Prayer. One word “debts” refers to things, the other word “debtors” refers to people. God has never abandoned us as people even though our actions often broke His heart. “Not willing that any should perish…” may be a key. Perhaps, God invites us to the divine side of this equation: to never lose sight of the personhood of people- even if their actions lead to natural consequences, require restitution, or even legal recourse. A sense of concern for the personhood and souls of others in non-negotiable.
