Story of God at Work

Jenna and Devon's Story

Our Daily Bread devotionals have really been a source of encouragement and spiritual teaching to me as a single mom over the last 14 years. Many times I and my daughter were unable to go to church due to finances/not enough gas to get to church or fellowship with other Christians. We used your devotionals as a starting point to…

Humble Beginnings

It all started in 1938 with a small radio program called Detroit Bible Class. With his gravelly voice, Dr. M. R. DeHaan quickly captured the attention of listeners in the Detroit area, and eventually the nation.

Since then, we have been amazed at what God has done.

Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned…

There’s often confusion on what the fruit of the Spirit is and is not. It’s not a list of instructions of how we should live; rather the fruit are qualities we exhibit when we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. We are set free to live a new life in Christ, no longer indulging in selfish desires but enabled to serve…

Strengthen My Hands

Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, is the man credited with making Singapore what it is today. During his leadership, Singapore grew to be rich and prosperous and one of the most developed nations in Asia. Asked if he ever felt like giving up when he faced criticism and challenges during his many years of public service, he replied, “This is a life-long commitment.”

Leave Room for God

As servants of God, we must learn to make room for Him-to give God “elbow room.” We plan and figure and predict that this or that will happen, but we forget to make room for God to come in as He chooses. Would we be surprised if God came into our meeting or into our preaching in a way we had never expected Him to come? Do not look for God to come in a particular way, but do look for Him. The way to make room for Him is to expect Him to come, but not in a certain way. No matter how well we may know God, the great lesson to learn is that He may break in at any minute.

Chill Or Kill?

US President Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, was angered by an army officer who accused him of favoritism. Stanton complained to Lincoln, who suggested that Stanton write the officer a letter. Later, Stanton told the President he was ready to send the strongly worded letter. Lincoln said, “You don’t want to send that letter. . . . Put it in the stove. That’s what I do when I have written a letter while I am angry. It’s a good letter, and you had a good time writing it and feel better. Now burn it, and write another.”

Marriage & Family

Why There’s No Better Family than One with Christ

THEME: THANKSGIVING Written By Vania Tan   I come from a family of five—there’s my father, mother, two older sisters and me. Together we’re dysfunctional, disorganised, lazy and sometimes crazy. But behind it all, we’re a very loving bunch. So “family” is a term that I hold dear to my heart. It is the very […]

families and pendulums

My middle-aged friend was struggling to value his local church. He was raised in a home that emphasized a personal relationship with God but didn’t care much for organized religion. When his parents were younger, their church had stopped preaching the gospel, so they became suspicious of all churches. They passed their skepticism on to their son. I’m hoping he won’t overcorrect and allow corporate worship to replace his own time in prayer and reading God’s Word.

Sibling Rivalry

It is our human nature to compare and our siblings are the most available person to compare ourselves to. Hence, if you are not the only child, probably, you have experienced what is commonly known as “sibling rivalry.” According to Dr. William Antonio Boyle, sibling rivalry is defined as “the antagonism or hostility between brothers and/or […]

Spiritual Growth

Continuous Conversion
My Utmost For His Highest

These words of our Lord refer to our initial conversion, but we should continue to turn to God as children, being continuously converted every day of our lives. If we trust in our own abilities, instead of God’s, we produce consequences for which God will hold us responsible. When God through His sovereignty brings us into new situations, we should immediately make sure that our natural life submits to the spiritual, obeying the orders of the Spirit of God.

Oranges Or Milk?
Our Daily Bread

When I told my young daughter that a 3-month-old baby boy was coming to our house for a visit, she was delighted. With a child’s sense of hospitality, she suggested that we share some of our food with the baby; she thought he might enjoy a juicy orange from the bowl on our kitchen counter. I explained that the baby could drink only milk, but that he might like oranges when he was older.

The Growth Chart
Our Daily Bread

If my family ever moves from the house where we live now, I want to unhinge the pantry door and take it with me! That door is special because it shows how my children have grown over the years. Every few months, my husband and I place our children against the door and pencil a mark just above their heads. According to our growth chart, my daughter shot up 4 inches in just 1 year!
