Stories of God at Work

from Australia

A broken dream isn’t the greatest tragedy, but a life forever defined by it is. Creating a healthy new normal after the death of a dream is essential. In this condensed version of their documentary, Sheridan and Merryn Voysey understand facing a new normal. In A Journey Through Broken Dreams, they candidly share their struggle with infertility, the decade of medical procedures they endured to try to conceive a child, and the decision to redesign their lives with career changes and a major move to another continent. Their life didn’t go as planned, but ultimately they found peace in their…

"Do You Now Believe?"
My Utmost For His Highest

Now we believe. . . .” But Jesus asks, “Do you . . . ? Indeed the hour is coming . . . that you . . . will leave Me alone” (John 16:31-32). Many Christian workers have left Jesus Christ alone and yet tried to serve Him out of a sense of duty, or because they sense a need as a result of their own discernment. The reason for this is actually the absence of the resurrection life of Jesus. Our soul has gotten out of intimate contact with God by leaning on our own religious understanding (see Proverbs 3:5-6). This is not deliberate sin and there is no punishment attached to it.

What If?
Our Daily Journey

In a recent email, a woman named Renee told me how she and her husband had unsuccessfully spent years trying to start a family. After numerous rounds of in vitro fertilization treatment and several years waiting to adopt, they were exhausted from the ordeal and considering bringing the journey to an end. Knowing that my wife and I had walked a similar path, Renee asked a question. “How do you give up on a dream of parenthood without regretting what might have been?”

A pastor told this story on himself in his local newspaper. He was chatting with an older man to whom he had just been introduced. “So, you used to work for a utility company,” the pastor said, naming the organization. “Sure did,” the man responded. The pastor remarked that when he was a kid the cables from that company ran across his parents’ property. “Where did you live?” the man asked. When the pastor told him, the man said, “I remember that property. I had a tough time keeping the cable warning signs up. Kids were always shooting them down.”…

The Art Of Constructive Criticism
Sports Spectrum

I’m fascinated by what the television networks call “analysts” or “color commentators.” Their role is to inform the viewer about what is happening and why it is happening that way. Sometimes they do that through praise, and sometimes they do that through criticism. Both have their place—but they must be measured. I think about this,…

Welcome Sounds
Sports Spectrum

On Monday, we discussed the unhappy sounds of conflict that marked the start of the NASCAR season in Daytona. Today, however, we want to consider some much happier sounds—the sounds of Major League Baseball spring training. The pop of mitts and the crack of bats do more than just inform us that America’s pastime is…

There’s often confusion on what the fruit of the Spirit is and is not. It’s not a list of instructions of how we should live; rather the fruit are qualities we exhibit when we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. We are set free to live a new life in Christ, no longer indulging in selfish desires but enabled to serve…
